Mathematics is either a compulsory or elective component of the first year, first semester teaching program of many of the science degrees and science-based degree programs at most tertiary institutions, including Griffith University. If you have enrolled in one of these degree courses and you have a limited background in Mathematics or you lack confidence in your ability to ‘handle’ algebraic manipulation, we have prepared an intensive revision course. This course is designed for students to gain skills and confidence in the basic Mathematical techniques underlying typical university science courses such as 1st year chemistry (1021SCG and 1022SCG), 1st year physics (1031SCG and 1032SCG), Quantitative Reasoning (1015SCG), Linear Algebra (1201SCG) and Calculus I (1202SCG).

Course Duration: Four Days

Date:        Monday, February 9 – Thursday, February 12
Time:        Time: 9am to 4:30pm (with an earlier finish on Thursday)

Venue:       TBA Griffith University – Nathan Campus Kessels Road, Nathan, 4111
Fees:          $170 (Inc. GST) for the entire four-day program

InstructorDr David Harman

The program involves:

  • Theory lectures (all notes and materials supplied)
  • Problem-solving tutorials
  • Small tutorial class sizes

This course is primarily aimed at students who would like to improve their confidence in basic algebra. It would also suit those students who have been away from Mathematics for some time and would like to improve their skills.

Please note, this course is run in-person and on campus only. There is no recording and no online option.

Topics covered include:

Basic algebraic manipulation                    Manipulation of linear equations
Factorisation                                           Multiplication of factors
Logarithms                                             Exponents
Qaudratic equations                                Simple applications
Simplyifying algebraic expressions           Simple Trigonometry

What previous participants had to say:

“I had a gap year, so it was a good ‘refresher’, reminded of a lot of forgotten things” “… started out slow instead of just skipping the basics, which was more helpful … ” ‘They encouraged us to ask questions if we didn’t understand and helped us without making us feel stupid” “In doing plenty of problems, my confidence boosted and my understanding increased.”

Refund of Fees

A refund will only be made when a candidate cancels his or her enrolment at least 3 days prior to the beginning of the course. Where a refund has been paid an administrative fee will be charged.

We reserve the right to cancel the course without notice if there are insufficient numbers, in which case a full refund will be paid.

Refund of fees will only be possible if cancellation is least three days prior to the course, (i.e. by Wednesday 4 February 2026)

NOTE (for students enrolled in 1201SCG (Linear Algebra) only): For a self-assessment, complete the algebra quiz for which the pass mark is 27 out of 30 (Do not look at the answers until you have completed the quiz.) This can be found on the Short Course website under the enrolment information for this course. Successful completion of a quiz of this type is a component of the course 1201SCG (Linear Algebra). If you cannot pass this quiz without difficulty, then you should seriously think about attending the Mathematics Short Course. The skills taught in this course will help you successfully complete this quiz and provide you with a sound footing for your Mathematics courses at Griffith University.
